Restricted Areas are a recurring gameplay feature in the Watch Dogs series.
Gameplay[]
Restricted Areas are featured in all Watch Dogs games, and are shown on the minimap as an area highlighted in red. These areas are filled with patrolling enemies from the area's controlling faction. In Watch Dogs, restricted areas only appear in missions, but in Watch Dogs 2 and Watch Dogs: Legion, they appear in free roam as well.
Watch Dogs[]
Restricted Areas are only shown in missions, as during free-roam they are void of enemies. If the player tries to access a restricted area, they will be given an in-game warning, and the player will be forced into stealth mode. If the player is caught, the enemies will engage them in combat. Most restricted areas are manned by Gunmen and Veterans, but highly restricted areas throughout the story can be guarded by Enforcers, Elites, and Marksmen.
Watch Dogs 2[]
Restricted Areas have been vastly improved upon in Watch Dogs 2. Now, more specialized enemies will patrol restricted areas, but will be more prone to hacks. If the player is caught infiltrating a restricted area, any nearby enemies will hold the player at gunpoint and arrest them unless a takedown is performed on the apprehending enemy, resulting in Heat. Specialized enemies such as the Grenadier will also patrol restricted areas in DLC missions.
Watch Dogs: Legion[]
Restricted Areas have returned in Watch Dogs: Legion with a more "safety in numbers" approach. Rather than restricted areas being guarded based on their size in Watch Dogs 2, restricted areas are now patrolled by a mass amount of enemies of different ranks. As opposed to being detained by enemies, if the player is caught by any patrolling enemies, they will engage in melee contact with the player until they are injured. If the player takes down enough enemies, a gunfight will ensue.
Tactics[]
In order to avoid being caught infiltrating a restricted area, it is encouraged that the player utilizes cover and hacking religiously to keep enemies busy while doing so. Most enemies will patrol in staged ways so that the player can take them down with various hackable objects. If they plan to use a more loud approach, it is recommended that they use explosive objects, vehicles, and other gadgets to take down lots of enemies at the same time, as most restricted areas will have tons of cover for enemies to bunch up and use.
