Reputation bar at Protector rank

Reputation bar at Protector rank

Reputation is a game mechanic in Watch Dogs.

Summary[]

Reputation represents the public opinion of Aiden Pearce. It is represented by a meter in-game that can be accessed from the Statistics menu on Aiden's smartphone. Depending on the actions the player performs, Aiden may obtain a positive or negative reputation. The reputation is just a meter for how people feel about Aiden.

Acquisition[]

Reputation points are awarded based on how certain tasks are completed. More points are awarded for more skillful tasks. Completing "good deeds" that help civilians and hinder criminals will cause the reputation meter to fill towards the right with a blue fill.

Failing certain tasks and hurting civilians or police officers, or putting them at risk, will result in the loss of reputation. When mostly "bad deeds" are done, a red fill will appear towards the left, displaying the amount of negative reputation.

Ranks[]

Positive ranks[]

  • Vigilante, points needed: +67
    • Civilians recognize Aiden and take pictures of him. They rarely contact the police, and media coverage tends to portray his actions in a positive light. Some officers may even praise his vigilantism on the news, but acknowledge that criminal charges could still be brought against him.
  • Protector, points needed: +15
    • Civilians will only contact the police if Aiden commits a serious crime, such as homicide. The news may occasionally portray his actions in a positive light.

Incognito rank[]

  • Citizen, points needed: -14 to +14
    • At this rank, Aiden blends in as an ordinary citizen. Civilians may or may not report him to the police, regardless of the crime, and his actions are rarely mentioned on the news.

Negative ranks[]

  • Anarchist, points needed: -15
    • Civilians are more likely to report Aiden to the police, even for minor crimes such as grand theft auto or ATM hacking. Media coverage generally portrays his actions in a negative light.
  • Menace, points needed: -67
    • Civilians are always on the lookout for Aiden and will immediately report him to the police if spotted, even if he has not yet committed a crime. News coverage speaks extremely negatively about him, stating that the police are actively searching for his whereabouts.

Deeds[]

The player can choose to perform tasks to alter their reputation.

  • Stopping criminals before they harm their victims (+2)

  • Killing civilians (−2)
  • Injuring civilians (−2)
  • Killing police officers (−2)
  • Robbing stores (−2)
  • Using unwarranted force (i.e. killing a non-violent criminal or neutralizing someone before they’ve committed a crime) (−2)
  • Disabling police officers (i.e. shooting an officer in the leg or hitting them with a vehicle) (−1)
  • Failing to apprehend a target after they've committed a crime (-1)

Trivia[]

  • In early footage of the game, the reputation bar was divided into more segments, suggesting that the game originally featured additional ranks. One of the scrapped ranks was called Sentinel.
    • It's possible this rank would have been placed between the Protector and Vigilante ranks.
  • Indirectly causing the deaths of others (e.g. shooting a vehicle to make it explode, causing a car accident or getting civilians caught in crossfire) does not affect the player's reputation.
  • Though rare, it is possible to disable or kill police officers without it negatively affecting the reputation meter. However, this is likely a bug, as there are no specific conditions to trigger it.
  • The Reputation meter does not return in Watch Dogs 2 or Watch Dogs: Legion.
