The number of followers increases depending on what the player does, like taking pictures and using the Director's Cut app to apply filters to them, or completing missions. Some missions require a certain amount of followers to unlock. Gain enough followers (leveling up) to earn research points. The higher level, the more followers you need, and the more research points you earn.
