Buckingham Royal Mews is a location in Watch Dogs: Legion.
Summary[]
The historic equestrian stables of the British Royal family, present on Buckingham Palace grounds since 1820, this historic site and institution have suffered in the wake of the Albion takeover. The horses left behind by the dismissed caretakers came under the supervision of Albion operatives, with troops assigned to clean and feed the horses on a rotating basis. Seeing the neglect, Combat Engineer Moira Ashcroft volunteered to take care of the horses on a permanent basis, in order to give them some relief.[1]
Over time, the horses started to have an outsized impact on the operating expenses at the Mews and Ashcroft was ordered by Commander Ian Shiftswell (London Control) to "get the numbers into the black". The implication was that Ashcroft should dispose of the horses, and for that reason Shiftswell refused to attach official order, as shooting equines in the face was both illegal and against the Albion mandate.[2]
Ashcroft, an impoverished aristocrat, reached out to her family, trying to find them new homes. Her father, David, was only able to take in three out of fifteen, due to the crash of the pound wiping out much of the family fortune. The Lancasters, another aristocratic family, completely lost their estate in the crash.[3] With nowhere left for them, Ashcroft was forced to kill the animals, which triggered a severe stress-induced panic attack, initially mistaken for a heart attack. She was placed on indefinite medical leave, while Albion turned the Mews into yet another logistical hub and temporary holding facility.[4]
Layout[]
The Mews are a compact area, with lots of confined spaces and ways to break line of sight. The inner courtyard is filled with parked armored Matarhorns, patrolled by Albion troops, and an upper network of walkways and watchtowers was bolted onto the historic structure to provide control and oversight. The stables have been converted into garages and holding cells, and as usual, there are bodies of dissidents or just unlucky Londoners in body bags in the cells.
The text files are located on the walkways (northwestern tower and western balcony), with another near the main entrance and in the southern garage. The northeastern part of the garages also contains an ETO safe.

| FROM: M. Ashcroft TO: WES_Control SUBJECT: Stable Duty Hi Control, I’m stationed here at the Mews depot, and a lot of my colleagues have been complaining about the horses left behind in the stables. Whenever it’s someone’s turn for stable duty, they tend to rush through it, which of course only exacerbates the problem. I grew up in the country, and my family kept a number of horses. They simply need a bit of care and attention and I believe the animals would be considerably more pleasant for everyone. If you would adjust the rotation, I’d happily volunteer this duty. --- FROM: WES_Control TO: M. Ashcroft SUBJECT: Re: Stable Duty Request granted, Ashcroft. Better you than me. |

| MOIRA: I’m sorry I hung up on you, daddy. I’m not myself. DAVID: It’s alright. MOIRA: There’s really nothing we can do? DAVID: I’ve spoken with your mother. We may be able to take three. MOIRA: Three? That still leaves a dozen with nowhere to go. What about the Lancasters? They haven’t used that bloody stable in a decade. DAVID: They lost the estate when the pound crashed. Why are you doing this, anyway? MOIRA: I have to do something. DAVID: You can do something: leave. Why are you fooling about with these Albion people anyway? It’s beneath you. MOIRA: Someone has to pay your debts, father. DAVID: The pound will bounce back and everything will go back to normal. This is all temporary. MOIRA: It’s only temporary for those who survive. |
